Lets Save Water
Recommendation

Water is necessary for the sustenance of human life, particularly fresh potable water. Without conservation efforts, this vital resource may be exhausted. Let’s save water today for a better tomorrow!
Reduce Your Lawn Watering
Outdoor
04/28/2022 12:49 PM
Whether it’s thanks to a particularly hot summer or making sure your tomatoes grow healthy and strong, sometimes, you can’t just forgo watering your yard entirely. When you do water your outdoor plants, here are some lawn care tips for water conservation:
Direct the water onto the roots for the most efficient watering.
Water your yard in the evening, when it’s least likely to evaporate.
Know your soil type and water according to how much your soil needs.
Hand-water or use seep hoses or an automated irrigation system to precisely water your yard.
Ditch the sprinklers, which are too broad to provide accurate watering.
Plant Native Plants
Outdoor
04/28/2022 12:50 PM
Choosing native plants is an important way to conserve water. If you live in a dry region, choose plants that are drought-tolerant and resistant so you won't have to add supplemental irrigation to make up for dry spells.
One type of landscaping design you can use for an arid location is a xeriscape garden. Xeriscape gardens have a low-water landscape design that utilizes minimal irrigation or removes the need for it entirely. These low-maintenance gardens offer a beautiful aesthetic with cacti, succulents, aloes, rocks, and more to give your yard a vibrant appearance without water usage.
Choose an In-Ground Irrigation System
Outdoor
04/28/2022 12:59 PM
In-ground irrigation systems are installed in one of two ways: through a metered water system or a pump system. The pump system option is the most environmentally friendly because it pumps water from a source of water, such as a nearby lake, river, or pond, and channels that water through the sprinkler to water your yard. This system saves you money on water while conserving local treated water systems.
With an irrigation system, you can automatically have it come on with a timer so that you don’t need to remember to go out and water your plants. This feature can also save money and time because you won’t be standing outside aimlessly spraying your plants with a hose. Instead, the time is set and calculated, giving you more control over your yard’s water usage.
Use a Greywater Irrigation System
Outdoor
04/28/2022 13:02 PM
Imagine reusing your greywater to water your plants. With a greywater system, you can. A greywater irrigation system takes your used bath, sink, shower, and washing machine water and redirects it from the sewer system to your yard instead.
If you want a simple method for installing a greywater system, the easiest way is to focus on the washing machine. Connect a diverter valve to the washing machine drain pipe and then attach a 1-inch tube to the diverter with smaller, half-inch outlets that lead to individual areas of your garden.
Maintain Your Pool
04/28/2022 13:04 PM
Pools are a major water waster. According to the EPA, an uncovered pool can lose as much as 30,000 gallons of water annually through evaporation. A pool cover can make a huge difference; one study from the National Plasterers Council shows that a solar pool cover can prevent up to 95% of evaporation. So, cover up those pools when not in use to save on water.
Water the soil, not the leaves
Outdoor
04/28/2022 13:13 PM
Water at the root zone to keep evaporation to a minimum. Keeping water off your plants’ leaves will also help control fungal diseases and prevent sunscald. A professionally-designed irrigation system – drip or otherwise – is far better at proper water delivery than the simple lawn sprinklers you can buy in the hardware store. It is an investment that will pay for itself over time in reduced water bills and healthier plants.
Install a rain barrel
Outdoor
04/28/2022 13:15 PM
It’s good for plants because it’s free of many of the salts and chemicals that are present in most groundwater or city-water sources. Many municipalities are now offering incentives to homeowners who install these inexpensive water-saving devices. A landscape-irrigation expert can help you decide how best to integrate your rainwater with your existing irrigation system.
Don’t overwater
Outdoor
04/28/2022 13:15 PM
It sounds simplistic, but more water is wasted through overwatering than for any other reason. Watering too much doesn’t just waste a precious resource. It is also very bad for your plants. Too much water in the soil stresses your plants’ root systems and contributes to root rot and fungal and bacterial disease. Consult your landscape professional for help in designing a watering system and/or schedule to deliver the correct amount of water for your landscape
Tell your children not to play with the hose and sprinklers
Recommendation
04/28/2022 13:24 PM
Children love to play under a hose or sprinkler on a hot day. Unfortunately, this practice is extremely wasteful of precious water and should be discouraged.
Check for leaks in pipes, hoses faucets and couplings
Recommendation
04/28/2022 13:24 PM
Leaks outside the house are easier to ignore since they since they don't mess up the floor or keep you awake at night. However, they can be even more wasteful than inside water leaks especially when they occur on your main water line.
Don't water the gutter
Recommendation
04/28/2022 13:25 PM
Position your sprinklers so that water lands on your lawn or garden, not in areas where it does no good. Also, avoid watering on windy days when much of your water may be carried off to the streets and sidewalks
Check your toilet for leaks.
Recommendation
04/28/2022 13:26 PM
Put a few drops of food coloring in your toilet tank. If, without flushing, the coloring begins to appear in the bowl., you have a leak that may be wasting more than 100 gallons of water a day.
IN THE KITCHEN
Indoor
04/28/2022 13:39 PM
- Keep a bottle of drinking water in the refrigerator. This way, there is no need to run the tap to get cool water.
- Only use the dishwasher for full loads.
- Don’t wash dishes under continuous running water. Fill one side of the sink with clean water for rinsing and use the other side for washing, or put washed dishes in a rack and rinse them all at once.
- Wash vegetables in a pan of water instead of under a running faucet. Re-use that water to water household plants.
- Don’t use in-sink garbage disposals, which require a lot of water for operation. Instead, dispose of food waste in a compost pile.
- Check faucets and pipes for leaks. Even a small drip from a worn washer can waste 20 gallons of water a day, while larger leaks can waste even more.
- Install faucet aerators, which are inexpensive devices that can reduce water usage by up to 60%.
IN THE BATHROOM
Indoor
04/28/2022 13:40 PM
- Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving. Fill the sink to shave instead of letting the water run.
- Check toilets for leaks. Add about 12 drops of food coloring, or a leak-detection tablet, into the tank. If color appears in the bowl an hour later, then there is a leak.
- Install a toilet displacement device in the toilet tank. Place a plastic bottle, weighted with water or sand, into the tank, making sure that it doesn’t interfere with the flushing mechanism. Don’t use a brick, which may chip.
- If you are buying a new toilet, select a low-flush model that uses less than 1.5 gallons of water per flush.
- Take shorter showers. Install a water-saving showerhead, which can cut water usage in the shower from 5–7 gallons per minute to just 3 gallons per minute.
WHEN DOING LAUNDRY
Indoor
04/28/2022 13:40 PM
- Only run the washing machine for full loads.
- When buying a new washing machine, buy one that can be adjusted to load-size and has a “suds-saving” option.
Use Clothes Washer for Only Full Loads
RebateSavingTips
04/28/2022 13:48 PM
With clothes washers, avoid the permanent press cycle, which uses an added 5 gallons (20 liters) for the extra rinse. For partial loads, adjust water levels to match the size of the load.
Cover Swimming Pools to Reduce Evaporation
RebateSavingTips
04/28/2022 13:48 PM
Swimming pools can lose an inch or more of water each week to evaporation. Temperature, humidity, wind, and the way the pool is situated can all affect how quickly water evaporates. To save thousands of gallons of pool water each season, get a cover for your pool.
Maintain Your Irrigation System
RebateSavingTips
04/28/2022 13:49 PM
If you use an irrigation system, check that it’s operating correctly toward the beginning and end of each season. Clear any visible clogs, and adjust the settings according to the needs of your plants and the time of year. Plants will need less water in cooler weather and more in hotter weather, and correct settings will not only save water but ensure that plants are getting the right amounts. Also be sure the timer waters in the morning to reduce loss to evaporation and prevent moisture from staying on plants overnight.
